| Paint-By-Number Project | ||||
| Description: | Each student will explore the interaction of shapes and color and how they can create space, while at the same time, assembling an abstract looking composition that conveys theological ideas. | |||
| Objectives: | ||||
| 1. | Work with found imagery to construct complex sequence of shapes that correlate to the compositions created by the rest of the class. | |||
| 2. | Integrate abstract shapes with realistic imagery. | |||
| 3. | Practice color mixing and matching color and value. | |||
| 4. | Discover how color and value create the illusion of space. | |||
| 5. | Practice craftsmanship with paint, brushes, power saws and knives. | |||
| 6. | .Learn basic woodshop safety. | |||
| 7. | Discover how basic visual elements carry symbolic content. | |||
| Procedure: | ||||
| • Each student will receive several fragments cut from paint-by-number kits. You are to arrange your parts in relation to the center image, so that they work together with the shapes created by the rest of the class. You may re-cut your shapes to create different arrangements. | ||||
| • The center image is the paint-by-number image of Sallman’s Head of Christ. Each student will get a section cut from that image. Each piece will have a particular orientation which must by maintained. The class must work together to understand the basic arrangement of the parts so that their individual arrangement will fit in. | ||||
| • Each center part has an outside edge. You are to arrange your parts along that outside edge. Your parts should be arranged so that they radiate from the center image. That means that they will probably be connected in a line from the edge of the center piece. | ||||
| • Once your arrangement is decided, lay the pieces out on the plywood panel so that the plywood can be cut for your piece. The plywood will be cut in to rough sections by the instructor. | ||||
| • You will then paint matte medium on your panel and quickly adhere your p-b-n panels to the plywood. The panels then must be stacked so that they compress and flatten the boards will they dry over night. The instructor will supervise this step because it is very easy to accidentally move the p-b-n panels on the plywood before they dry destroying the arrangement. | ||||
| • Come to class the next day or as soon as possible after the next day. The panels should be dry. The next step is to cut the plywood precisely around the paint-by-number panels using the band saw or a saber saw. You will be given instructions on how to use the power equipment safely. Please follow all guidelines carefully. | ||||
| • Once the panels have been finally cut out, you are ready to start the painting process. If you haven’t already, divide you panels into thirds. | ||||
| • One third is to be painted following the paint-by-number kit as exactly as possible. | ||||
| • One third is to be painted with acrylic, black and white paint, mixed to match the value of each paint-by-number color with a gray. Try to match to value but use only grays to create the image. | ||||
| • The final third can be painted anyway you want. Try to interact with the paint-by-number scheme. There is a logic or a system that you can dismantle, deconstruct, play with or ignore. But it is best to think about the given imagery and system so that there is some sense to your choices in relation to the panels. | ||||
| • That is the basic idea. Ask questions if any part of this leaves you wondering what to do next. | ||||
| Guidelines: | ||||
| —The paint-by-number paint is oil based so you can not clean up with water. Do not add water to the oil based paint. Wipe your brushes with paper towel. If you will not be working with the oil paint for several days between uses, you can use a small amount of paint thinner to clean your brush. Follow the procedure discussed in class. | ||||
| —You may need to sand you edges or trim them to get them as smooth as needed. Sand paper will be provided in class. | ||||
