Project One
  Drawing in Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
  • create shapes, mix colors and apply them to describe form using Adobe Illustrator
  • learn the drawing tools and the selection tools in Illustrator
  • practice drawing on the computer
  • explore the filters and effects in Illustrator by applying them to a basic drawn illustration
  • create variety by combining a Illustrator features.

Task 1:
Draw a self portrait using the pencil tool to create solid color shapes that correspond to color shapes observed while looking in a mirror. Work from life, not from photographs. Use as many colors as possible while maintaining verisimilitude. Use only fill colors, no strokes. Do not apply filters or place your shapes on layers. Use solid colors. Do not apply transparency. Create your self portrait in a letter size document. Print it on Blanche.

Variations
A. Take a digital photograph self portrait. Place it on the first layer and turn it into a template. Draw your color shapes on top of the photo using it as a guide. Use solid color shapes and as much variety of color as possible.

B. Copy your face on the copy machine. Try rolling or distorting the features. Then scan the copy into your computer and use the scanned image as a template on the first layer of your illustrator document. Then draw solid color shapes with variety and create a new self portrait

C.

Find a photograph of a famous person and create a drawn illustration following the same procedures outlined above.

Task 2:
Create an illustration/drawing of a landscape using the same procedure described above. Work either from life or from a photograph.

Task 3:
Explore the filters and effects in Adobe Illustrator. Apply single filters or combinations of filters, effects, blending modes and transparency to any of the illustrations described above.

Create twelve variations. Apply effects to any or all of the previous drawings.

Tack your work to the bulletin board, or behind your computer, as you complete it. Print work out on Blanche. Play with scale. Try different sizes.
