Typesetting for
Expression |
| |
Examine Chapter
8, “Typographical Journey”, in Digital Color and Type
by Rob Carter. |
| |
Objectives: |
| |
1. Explore filters
and effects for creative layout in Illustrator. |
| |
2. Practice controlling
the reading speed of the viewer by altering the arrangement and other design
elements associated with typesetting. |
| |
3. Express the
content of the text through typography |
| |
4. Develop continuity
through a series of two page spreads. |
| |
| |
Procedure: |
| |
1. Choose three
proverbs from the book of Proverbs in the Bible. |
| |
| |
2. Creatively
typeset the proverbs each on a two page spread based on the CD book (5"
square). |
| |
| |
3. Design the
spreads so that they look like they would go together in a book, that is,
create visual continuity: devise a color scheme, or a compositional structure
or etc. to tie the pages together. |
| |
| |
4. Practice by
doing ideas based on five or six different proverbs. Pick the three that
work the best. Narrow it down to a style that will work with each proverb. |
| |
| |
5. Set up your
document as a horizontal 8.5 x 11" page. . |
| |
| |
6. Set type in
shapes, set type on a path, vary the fonts, size, spacing, add color, use
filters, gradients. |
| |
| |
7. Do not use
pictures to express the content. Use rhythm, spacing, and variation to control
the reading. Use figure/ground reversal, word illustration, and other tricks
to do two things: one) be expressive, two) control the speed and pattern
of reading. |
