Teng was born in Laos and came to the US in the summer of 1994.
The reason why they came to the US was because living in Laos was a danger to
him and his family. It was due to the aftermath of the Vietnam War. They were
escaping persecution from the Vietnamese government and seeking a better way
of life. Yet, it was not easy for his family to come to the US. They had to
cross the Meng Kong River and sneak through jungles avoiding Vietnamese soldiers,
bombs, leeches, and etc. Despite the hardship his family endured, they made
it to Thailand and camped there as refuges and finally were able to come to
the US. He was about six or seven years old when he landed on North Carolina.
He lived there about two years and then moved to Wausau, WI. There he reunited
with his father after having been separated for two years.
After having settled in Wisconsin, it was here that he started
to increase his knowledge. When he was in North Carolina or even in Thailand
or Laos, he did not take much interest in education. The child once neglecting
his home works suddenly started to pick up his pencil and papers. As the saying
goes, "The older you are, the wiser you get," he started to realize
that he is very fortunate to go to school. School was not free in Laos nor was
his parents educated when they were young. It was an opportunity for him to
become educated and then use that knowledge to find a stable job and live a
life of freedom, peace, and joy; whereas, if he was in Laos, he would be working
everyday as a farmer for the rest of his life. He would not have the luxury
he had had in America.
Today, he is the first person in his family to attend college
while graduating as a top ten student of his school. He is recently attending
a private school, Bethel University, and hopes to finish college and then find
a job in the area of management as well as living a godly, christianly life.
Other goals he had are to get marry, start his own family, and own a home. He
also wants to become actively involved with ministry, helping spread the Gospel
of Jesus Christ throughout the entire world. Having been given grace, he wants
to pass it on to others.
He found his faith when he was a little boy in North Carolina.
It was there that he was introduced to church and the Gospel. Nonetheless, the
breakthrough was when he asked Jesus Christ to become his protector, provider,
and savior after having watched the Jesus film one night. Though it grasped
his heart and soul, he was not totally willing to act out his faith nor was
educated about it until he moved to Wisconsin. Once again, he came to ask God's
forgiveness with the guide of his nephew, who was also a believer. He did not
know that you need only to do it once, but it was clearer to him this time around.
Needless to say, he was recommitting his life to Christ; yet, he did not do
it whole heartedly. Life just went on and he found himself studying harder and
drifting each day towards God. It was not that he went to church, pray often,
or read the Bible constantly, but that God was drawing Teng to Himself. He did
not start doing any of that until he reached high school. He found a church,
Calvary Church, which he liked and started attending it regularly during his
sophomore year. It was through this church that he became involved in church
ministries and grew spiritually in his daily walk. It was also where he learned
many new things about church, God, and his faith and he is still learning even
today. He hopes only to learn more, but more importantly, to experience God
in a new and personal way.
