Personal Home Page Policies
Bethel University has no obligation to provide a personal home page to
anyone. However, the institution does intend to provide responsible
community members with the opportunity to maintain a personal home page.
Home page maintainers need to recognize that
- A home page is a revocable privilege.
- Whether
the individual likes it or not, the very fact of using the Bethel
network means that the home page represents Bethel just as much as it
does the individual. That knowledge must guide the page's creation.
Network Ethics, Etiquette, and Legality
All individuals using Bethel's computing equipment and connections must
abide by Bethel's policies regarding ethical and legal use of
resources. This policy is presented in the document Computing Acceptable Use Policy.
Individuals who maintain personal home pages on the Bethel network are
further expected to keep their pages in conformance to their profession
as followers of Jesus Christ. This will be discussed more fully in the
next section. However, one aspect of this injunction is the expectation
that members of the Bethel community will exercise proper World-Wide
Web netiquette. Please keep in mind that:
Authors
of HTML documents are responsible for what they allow others to access
on their pages or through a direct link from one of their pages.
Home Page Contents
The items mentioned below are not intended to be exhaustive. They
should instead serve as guidelines for the type of information that is
and is not acceptable on Bethel personal home pages. The general idea
is that personal home pages represent both the individual and Bethel.
Material needs to conform to the mission of the institution as well as
the interests of the individual.
The guidelines
are intended to provide a framework for expression, not as a fence to
keep the individual from meaningful expression.
Required
All personal home pages must contain the following:
- Proper
<head> , <title> , and <body> sections. The title
should be filled in. The maintainer's Bethel e-mail address should be
visible somewhere in the document.
- Due
to limited resources, your HTML documents, together with any graphic
images and sound files, are counted as part of your UNIX quota, along
with your Bethel email. The total size of all your data may not exceed
this quota, currently 85MB for students and 210MB for faculty/staff.
- Your
pages may contain material copyrighted by someone other than yourself
if permission has been obtained from the copyright holder. The original
author and copyright holder should be clearly and fully acknowledged.
Strongly Suggested
- You should take the time to check your HTML using a validation program, such as that provided by W3C HTML Validation Service.
- If the Bethel webmaster cannot read your page with standard web browsers, your link will probably be removed.
- Although
it is fun to use lots of exotic, non-standard HTML extensions, it makes
viewing difficult for many potential visitors to your pages. Using only
standard HTML (as presented in the tutorials) will ensure that everyone can view your page.
Unacceptable
- Direct links to illegal, socially harmful, or pornographic material.
- Text,
images, or sounds which violate Bethel Lifestyle expectations or which
are illegal according to local, state, national, or international laws.
- You
may not create pages that contain material copyrighted by someone other
than yourself unless permission has been obtained from the copyright
holder. The original author and copyright holder should be clearly and
fully acknowledged if permission is given. You should even be cautious
about creating links to pages that contain unapproved copyrighted
material.
- You may not use Bethel's resources for commercial gain.
