Biography

Glen, a Canadian, joined Bethel Seminary's faculty after serving as academic vice-president of North American Baptist College in Edmonton, Alberta. He has lectured internationally in such places as Ukraine, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong and the People's Republic of China. He and his wife Kate have three adult daughters, two sons-in-law, and six grandchildren. It has become an extended family tradition to rent cabins for one week every year at Lake George, above Mammoth Lakes in California's High Sierras. It is the closest thing Glen has found to the alpine environment of Banff, Alberta in his native Canada. Glen's spouse, Kate, also holds a Ph.D., and continues to teach and publish in the field of disability studies.

Glen is a strong proponent of gender egalitarianism, believing that the Christian community should be a place of dignity, equality, and empowerment for women. And he believes that this is the vision to which Scripture, properly interpreted, actually points.

In recent years, Glen has also become convinced that the recovery of a robust, authentic, Spirit-attuned Christian spirituality will be key to the renewal of the Christian church in America, especially within the evangelical community. In short, he agrees with Hans Urs von Balthasar that spiritual theology is simply "the subjective side of dogmatics." In other words, it belongs in theology!

Glen has also come to see that it is part of our calling as Christians to care for God's creation, and especially since the health and wellbeing of future generations depends upon it. Environmental stewardship is therefore an expression of love. And caring for creation is one of the ways we make the Gospel even more credible in our time.
