Bethel athletics continue to grow in strength and reputation. Spring season saw athletes and coaches again winning MIAC and NCAA awards, and fall/winter teams expect successful showings. Here are highlights in each sport. For the full stories and season schedules, visit the Athletics website.

Spring 2007 Wrap-up

Baseball

Kirby Carr
Kirby Carr

Kirby Carr (‘07, Fergus Falls, Minn.) received a NCAA postgraduate scholarship, was named to the All-MIAC First Team for the fourth straight year, and rewrote the Bethel baseball record book, setting career marks in batting avg. (.414), home runs (37), hits (196), and runs batted in (154). Greg Indlecoffer scored his 100th win as head baseball coach.

Softball

Catcher Molly Trombley (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC First Team. The Royals racked up an eight-game unbeaten streak during the team's Florida Spring Break trip.

Tennis

Bethel's own Dan Morton was named MIAC Coach of the Year while Mark Hallstrom (‘07, Willmar, Minn.), David Torres (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.), and Steve Torres (‘07, Arden Hills, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honors. In women's tennis, Andrea Beegle (Sr., Edina, Minn.) and Kari Blair (‘07, Glenwood, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honors.

Track & Field

Coach Jim Timp was named Men's and Women's MIAC Indoor Track Coach of the Year. Lucas Blodgett (Jr., Spring Valley, Wis.) was named to the Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as were Vanessa Moore (Jr., Niagara, Wis.), Sheri Netland (‘07 Coon Rapids, Minn.), and Jennae Palmer (Sr., Mounds View, Minn.) on the women's side. Moore also earned All-American status in the high jump.

Fall 2007 Preview

Football

Defending MIAC champion Bethel University has been ranked #24 in the preseason poll by D3Football.com and rated #2 by MIAC coaches. Brandon Carr (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) was named preseason All-American by D3Football.com, and was featured in the Star Tribune. The football team is 2-1 going into Saturday's Homecoming game against Carleton.

Soccer

Three returning seniors, Matt Duer (Andover, Minn.), Andrew Heiligenthal (Ames, Ia.), and Jake Haws (Fergus Falls, Minn.) are leading a young and energetic men's team under new head coach Pepe Jon Chavez. The women's team will miss Bethel All-Time goals-scored record holder Lauren Johnson, but has eight returning starters, led by Kristin Kishaba (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis.) and Esther Sowles (Jr., Waconia, Minn.). Men's socer is 1-6 overall and 0-2 in MIAC play at time of printing. Women's soccer is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play at time of printing.

Volleyball

This formidable team returns their entire starting lineup from 2006, including two-time All-MIAC selection Liz Glesne (Sr., Underwood, Minn.).

Men's and Women's Cross Country

Men's and women's teams retain a majority of talent from last year, when both squads earned All- Academic team honors. Returning talent includes Nikki Umhoefer (Sr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) and Carl Gladitsch (Jr., Bloomer, Wis.), who earned All-Academic individual honors as well as All-Conference and All-Region awards. Also back is Dan Greeno (Soph., St. Michael, Minn.), who set a Bethel record for the 8k, and was a national qualifier last year.

Men's Golf

New coach Joel Johnson (also the Royals hockey coach), will lead six returning varsity players and an expected infusion of new talent. Count on seniors Jared Carr, captain (Ottertail, Minn.), and Andrew Walker (Emery, S.D.) to play a central role with scoring.
