San Diego Dead Sea Scrolls

In August 2007, Bethel Seminary San Diego and Bethel University’s Office of Constituent Relations hosted three events that focused on the Dead Sea Scrolls, hailed as one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century.

More than 200 friends and alumni of Bethel University enjoyed a lecture presented by seminary faculty, a luncheon on the rooftop of the museum, and a visit to the exhibit itself.

Friday night’s lecture featured Bethel Seminary San Diego Professor of New Testament Mark Strauss, Ph.D. and Professor Emeritus of Old Testament and Hebrew Ron Youngblood. The two gifted theologians discussed aspects of the Dead Sea Scrolls including their history, discovery, and significance for believers today. The scrolls, discovered in the 1940s and ’50s, are believed to be the oldest surviving manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).

The event was a huge success. Many thanks to Debbie Espeland and Caleb Hummel (BSSD) for making arrangements, as well as to Blair and Debbie (Hanley) Szymczyk and Sarah and Ryan Sandberg for volunteering time to assist those who participated.

Due to overwhelming response, Bethel Seminary San Diego plans an encore lecture, luncheon, and museum trip in early December. More information about this special Bethel event will be available online soon.
