Dear Classmates of Bethel Class of ’64:

A great time was had by all as we celebrated our 45th Bethel University class reunion during Homecoming 2009.

The golf tournament our class sponsored occurred on Friday in spite of the somewhat inclement weather. While the grounds may have been dampened, the spirits of the participants certainly were not. We especially welcomed two women to the group this year, and hope to see more women participate in the future. Of special note is the $750 that was raised toward our class endowment scholarship fund.

Saturday offered a variety of opportunities to reconnect with past Bethel folks, awaken some memories, and marvel at the continued growth and progress of our alma mater. Activities included inside and outside tours of the campus, lunch in the new cafeteria, sessions presented by Bethel faculty concerning various topics, and of course, the HOMECOMING GAME with Concordia, which BETHEL WON.

The evening event was a highlight as well, beginning with registration and a punch reception. All reunion classes gathered together for a lovely meal in the new dining hall, and we heard inspiring greetings from President Barnes, Ralph Gustafson, and alumna of the year, Mary Pawlenty.

We then dispersed to our separate meeting rooms in the new Brushaber Commons where we continued our fellowship. Picture name tags and memory books brought mixed responses of giggles and memories. Many shared about events that have been life-changing and Christ-focusing in their lives. Ron Danielson tested our memories with a quiz of our Bethel years, and game winners were awarded neat Bethel memorabilia.

Our class invited two guests to share some memories, also. We regret that Nancy Lundquist was not able to join us due to a medical complication, but she sent heartwarming greetings through Carole (Spickelmier), her daughter. Nancy is also preparing for a 90th birthday celebration. Keith and Judy Tekautz were on hand and serve as classic reminders of how the entire staff contributed to the quality of our education and personal growth at Bethel.

Now it’s our turn to give back: let’s continue to support Bethel through our prayers and giving and personal interest in the university’s efforts to provide a quality education and challenge for personal growth in current student lives.

Thanks to the ’64 reunion committee members: Lee Carlson, Charlie Rogers, Dave Whitney, Marie (Hultberg) Heskowitz, Ron Danielson, Carole (Lundquist) Spickelmier, and Jim Nelson. Much appreciation and thanks also to Debbie Espeland and the Bethel Alumni staff for the efficient organizational support that made the entire weekend such an awesome success!!

Be sure to mark your “Blackberries” for next year’s golf fund raiser (Friday before Homecoming) and the BIG 50 reunion in 2014.

Blessings to you and yours,

Jim Nelson, Committee Chair
