Bethel University Homecoming 2009

1994

Dear Class of '94,

It doesn't seem hardly possible, but it is completely true. We have just returned from our 15th year college reunion only to discover that...we are still good looking, and getting close to 40 is not bad!

The alumni office did a great amount of work to make all the arrangements.Their assistance was unbelievable, and it is because of them that things went so well. Hats off to them all! We are thankful for all they did and continue to do. Here are some highlights from our fun time:

  • The new Brushaber Commons: Have mercy! What a fancy place!
  • Did you know Bethel University has a ballroom? What, what, what???
  • Our dinner offered us the current students’ experience as they go through the amazing dinner selections from the cutlery, pasta bar, Asian cuisine, salad bar, deli bar etc.—what a great way to stuff our tummies.
  • We were even told to bus our own trays! Traversing down the Titanic steps, which were all fancied up and such, was a bit scary, but it was also a great way to work off our fantastic dinner!
  • First Lady Mary Pawlenty is our Alumna of the Year, and she was our speaker.
  • After we broke up into class years, we had our yummy dessert.
  • We sat around, chatted, did some catching up, and really enjoyed ourselves. Prizes were handed out, and we did a little greeting/devotional...and talked some more.

You know, college was an enchanting time, and Bethel is an enchanting place. The campus is beautiful, and I hope walking around again reminded us about how much we loved this place.

Fifteen years is a long time. Next year, many of us from our class will celebrate our 20th high school reunion. It seems like time is speeding up. But, for a moment, it was good to take the time to come. To come and to hallow the moment as we celebrate the days when we were together every day. Days full of classes, friendships, sports, stinky laundry piles from roommates, late-night pizza calls, and crazy wild antics.

Looking around the room, it was so clear to see that we have more in common now than we had back when we first graced the place in fall of 1990. There were many who had not seen each other since May of 1994, and it was just beautiful and wonderful to see everyone!

I hope we can party someday like the class of 1984 which had over 100 people attend their reunion. What impressed me most was the way the class of 1984 lead the way with compassion for a classmate by setting up a silent auction. It is this very reason that we come back to our Bethel roots. We cared deeply for each other then, and we still do. We may want to consider creating a legacy class gift for future students. Wouldn't it be great to set up a class gift for our next reunion? And speaking of which, who would like to be on that committee?

And in the future, more of us will gather, stop to ponder, be grateful, reconnect, and treasure.

Please make plans to come to our 20th Bethel reunion. (I'd write University, but that is still odd to write.)

Father God, what fun. What fun to see friends that for four years, we shared so much with. Time has gone on from that moment, but it is good to reunite and remember and laugh. And it is fun to rediscover and find different common ground. I ask that you watch over my classmates until our next reunion...when some of us, like me, will have children ready to go off to college themselves. Thank you for the joy that Bethel provided and for the gift of Bethel to my entire family. Indeed, a treasure.

If you would still like to order a copy of our 1994 memory booklet, call the Alumni Office at 651.638.6462 or 1.800.255.8706, ext. 6462. The book has a nominal charge of $5.

May God be with each and every one of you and your families until we meet again.

Because God is good,

Kimberly Hurd-Horst
