Dear Friends from the Class of 1964,
This past Homecoming weekend was a memorable “Reunion of Friends”. Thanks to all of you who took the time to come together. It warmed all of our hearts to see you! Thought you might be interested to know who attended:
If your name is missing from this list, we really MISSED you!! We’ve often heard the comment, “I only attended Bethel one year (or two years).” Well, that doesn’t matter – we just want to see you again, so please begin planning now to join us in 2009, OK? OK!
Despite cold, rather inclement weather, several die-hard golfers played a round of golf on Friday, thereby raising $750 for the “Class of 1964 Scholarship”. Good going, guys! By the way, we are fast approaching our goal of $30,000…only a couple thousand to go, and it’s not too late to mail in your contribution!
Friday night we enjoyed an informal time of reminiscing and getting reacquainted. Sitting in a circle, and over cookies and spiced cider, we shared stories about our children, grandchildren, jobs/careers, places we’ve traveled to, some of our family traditions, and our hobbies/interests. In addition, we brought each other up to date on any classmates we have kept in touch with over the years. A highlight of the evening was gathering around the piano as Ed Anthony played and led us in several hymns we had sung during our Bethel days…And Can It Be? (One of Professor Julius Whittinger’s favorites), Now I Belong To Jesus, and Wonderful Grace of Jesus to name a few. Ed shared an amusing College Choir memory with us. It seems that while on tour, the choir arrived late at this particular church, immediately robed, and got on stage to sing. When time for intermission came, the choir filed out to a door on the side of the stage. As they began doing so, the audience erupted into laughter. It seems they were filing into a closet!
Saturday afternoon, the Bethel football team made a valiant effort but lost the game to St. Thomas in the final minute of play…so sad!
Then Saturday night, following a delicious dinner with all the reunion classes, our class gathered together for a program, emceed by Nancy Robertson Delin. Thank you, Nancy! It was a pleasure to meet Abigail Johnson, the student recipient of our “Class of 1964 Scholarship.” We also were happy to welcome our faculty guest – a dear friend, mentor, and coach – Dr. Owen Halleen, who is credited with turning around the Bethel football program in the 60s. He told us how the last 40 years have found him filling many roles – coach, teacher, mentor, administrator, and college president. He enjoyed seeing a photograph brought by Charlie Rogers and taken by John Davis – a photo of Owen, with players Charlie, Jim Nelson, Jerry Oas, and Don Peterson. After watching a short PowerPoint presentation from our Bethel days, Bob Swanson helped Nancy distribute prizes in various categories, e.g., the person with the most grandchildren (Charlie Rogers – 12), person who came the farthest (Gretchen Sawyer Fry – Atlanta), the person who taught at Bethel the longest (Carol Armstrong Pass – 15+ years in the Philosophy Dept.), etc., etc.
Now, doesn’t that all sound like fun? Well, it surely was. Christian friendship is a gift to treasure. We wish you now good health, meaningful relationships, and God’s rich blessings on your life…until we meet again.
In Friendship Always,
Your Reunion Committee of the Class of 1964
