Reunion Wrap-up Letter
Dear Bethel Class of 1971,
As a correspondent of a past generation might have written, “A good time was had by all.” That aptly describes our 35th Bethel reunion. It was a wonderful time: visiting old friends, watching Bethel beat St. Thomas in football, attending department gatherings, and reminiscing about our college years. With 54 attending the Saturday reception, dinner, and class program, there was plenty of chatter. The photos on our nametags helped jog our memories, but we are really just older versions of our youth.
Four special faculty guests joined us for the evening. Dr. Olaf Olsen, now in his 90s, offered the blessing for our evening together. Mrs. Nancy Lundquist gave us “the inside story” of Dr. Lundquist’s stunning hairstyle change. Marilyn Starr reported that when she retired from Bethel she worked with the Baptist General Conference’s senior’s program for those who are 55 and over—that’s us, folks! Don Rainbow still looks like he’s 23, his age when he joined the Bethel faculty.
One special highlight of the evening was a DVD Bruce Mulligan made of our Bethel years. What a flood of memories followed as we saw and heard faculty members, football photos (remember the win?), musical groups (including Bo Conrad’s Spit Band), Homecomings, dorm parents, and ourselves. Bruce (with permission) also created a “Best of the Spit Band” CD for each class member in attendance.
Trivia door prize questions stretched our recall:
1) What was Bethel’s tuition our senior year? ($1,650)
2) Who from our class was also a part-time Bethel instructor our senior year? (David Frykman)
3) Where did College Choir go on tour in 1968? (Europe)
In our freshman year, Bethel’s Festival of Christmas was an 11-year old tradition. Fast forward to December 2006 and you will be able to see Bethel’s 50th Festival of Christmas on public television.
By the way, if you see Dale Berry, ask him about the brass quintet that was scratched from the Festival of Christmas after its first performance.
Special thanks go to the Reunion Committee for a stellar job of making our evening so memorable. Consider being on the 2011 committee for our 40th; committee members get the added bonus of reminiscing early. Our evening program concluded with the singing of Great Is Thy Faithfulness. Though we each have had varied circumstances over the past 35 years, God remains faithful to us all.
