Alumni
Dear Class of ’86 Alum,
Many joined us for this year’s Homecoming events—104, in fact, but a few could not. Those of you who couldn’t be there—for whatever reason—please know that you were missed.
I love coming to my Bethel class reunions because it is a place to be authentic. Unlike high schools reunions, where people seem compelled to “show off” in some way, we can be real with our Bethel classmates. During the reunion weekend, I was able to talk with a few friends about things I’ve been going through in ministry, a sharing time that was powerfully connecting in a real and deep way. Bethel has been and continues to be an amazingly sacred place for many of us—sacred in the sense that God moves here.
Having said that, the evening was a ton of fun, too! Royal Family Feud was a smash hit, with the team of Rossi, Nordin, et al., overwhelming their opponents by answering some easy questions: “What have you done that you never thought you’d do?” (I’m a poster child for some responses: gaining weight, losing hair, driving a minivan, changing a zillion diapers, taking a kid to Sesame Street Live…)
Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the video tour of Bethel, which provided lots of laughs—especially in the jaywalking segments. During an interview, one current student named Eisenhower as Reagan’s vice president—and she was a history major! The best parts of the campus tour, however, are captured on our outtake reel. Joel spent hours in the edit booth, and if you become a Bethel donor at the “Partnership” level—a mere $250 a year—that disc of hilarious, never-before-seen footage will be our special gift to you. So, take care of that today!
Seriously, I want to thank our stellar reunion team. A couple of people said, “Joel and Brian didn’t really do much work…it was actually the women.” Absolutely true! They deserve highest honor for their amazing work—our thanks to Susan (Owens) Stevens, Suzy (Shelly) Goodsell, and Cheryl (Crellin) Larson. And as I mentioned, Joel did a bang up job with the video!
My prayer for all of us is that we all will give ourselves wholly to our God in the coming years so that He can take us, bless us and use us in ways that we can’t even imagine right now. See you in another five years!
With you, for Him,
Brian Stevens
PS: We came in second in reunion attendance this year—missing the top spot by only four. Let’s go for No. 1 in 2011!
