Alumni
Dear 1991 Bethel Classmates:
We gathered on September 30 to celebrate the time when Bethel was just a college, hair was mostly permed (we saw the pictures to prove it), and a 15-year reunion was part of an incomprehensible future. In the new art gallery overlooking the lake, we met for punch, chocolates and socializing before dinner. The socializing clearly went well, since we had to be shooed into dinner and were the last class seated!
The meal, served in Bethel’s always elegant gym, featured food that surpassed even those memorable SAGA “steak nights.” Dan Dye, 2006 Alumnus of the Year and a 1981 grad, gave a presentation that reminded us to keep our priorities clear and to put Christ at the center of our lives.
We returned to our gallery to enjoy a slide show reminding us of why early ’90s retro fashions may never be recycled. Of course, it also reminded us of all the fun, crazy times we had at Bethel, and of the great people we shared them with.
Our evening was emceed by Chris Shaw and Tom Steinle who are just as amusing, goofy, and capable as they were when the first George Bush was in office. Ever pick up your brown Bethel-issue phone to hear a poorly disguised voice confessing undying love? After a decade and a half, Chris and Tom stepped forward as the culprits, and even demonstrated their unscientific method for choosing the victims of their “Roster Roulette.”
But our time wasn’t all spent reminiscing. We heard some amazing stories of what people have been up to in the last 15 years in the “Who did What?” activity. Pairing surprising tales with the correct alum (Who, while in full Easter regalia, tackled their would-be purse snatcher? Who sang “The Star Spangled Banner” on national TV?) provided a glimpse into what some of us have been up to.
Chris and Tom’s poignant media presentation encouraged us to look ahead. Yep, those guys have a serious side, too. By melding reflections, images, Scripture and music, they inspired us to consider how to use the great foundation we received at Bethel and the 15 years of experience since to meaningfully move forward in our lives.
The evening ended with more socializing, and many were still at it when the caterers began to whisk away the empty coffee cups. Thanks to all who came and made it such a wonderful event. If you weren’t able to be there, we missed you!
Sincerely,
Ivy West Toquam, Craig Toquam, Joanie Daggett Heineman and Tonya Hansen Toutge
