The Certificate in Child and Adolescent Mental Health consists of a sequence of eight courses to help individuals learn how to assess and evaluate the mental health needs of kids and teenagers. Designed for professionals who have completed a graduate level licensure or degree program in education, counseling, or similar areas, the program helps learners develop appropriate intervention strategies for this population.
The need for such service is great. Adolescents face “identity issues, behavioral issues, drug use, drinking, eating disorders, self injury, the lack of a sense of belonging,” explains Katie Baumgardner, CAMH student.
Therapists can “provide some boundaries in showing them better ways to find answers to the questions they have and even just framing what the questions are. A lot of them are searching for something but they are not really sure what it is,” says Baumgardner.
