Artist Greg Lindquist unveiled a painting of the 35W bridge rebuilding when his exhibit “Remembrance of Things Present” opened at Bethel University’s 9th Street Entry Gallery on Friday, November 7. The painting, which commemorates the collapse and rebuilding of the 35W bridge, was commissioned by the Bethel University Department of Art for its permanent collection as a memorial of hope. It is based on a photo taken by Bethel Galleries Director Michelle Westmark.
Lindquist explores landscape as a memorial, and in his exhibition “Remembrance of Things Present” he explores New York’s industrial past and future residential growth. As American manufacturing has moved overseas, these unused warehouse buildings and structures—icons of the Industrial Revolution—have been transformed and reclaimed by luxury. The paintings balance a graphic sensibility with painterly animation and a subdued palette. Inspired by construction materials, Lindquist uses a range of metallic pigments in his palette to depict reflective bodies of water and bleak skies. Lindquist’s work has been recently reviewed in Art in America, Art News, The New York Sun, The New York Observer, The Brooklyn Paper, and NY Arts Magazine.
