Update on H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)

Publication date: Apr 29, 2009 3:59 p.m.

Bethel University officials continue to monitor the outbreak of influenza H1N1 (Swine Flu). Representatives from all schools of the university are meeting regularly to monitor the situation and prepare in the case that any changes in operations or procedures are needed. As has been reiterated by government officials, this situation is a cause for caution, not a cause for panic. Any further information related to the H1N1 flu and its effect on Bethel will be available at www.bethel.edu as this situation develops. At this time, there are no changes to operations or procedures.

If you feel ill
H1N1 flu symptoms include a fever of more than 101 degrees, coughing, sore throat, body aches, and possible nausea and diarrhea. If you are feeling any of these symptoms, please see Health Services or your health care provider. Health Services is open M-F, 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. A 24-hour referral line is also available at 651.638.6215.

In addition, if you get sick, limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Staying healthy
Health officials recommend following these precautions to limit the spread of flu:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizers are also effective.

  • Eat healthy foods and get enough sleep.
  • Contain coughs and sneezes with tissues, or use a shoulder or crook of the elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash after use, and wash hands.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Use sanitizing or disinfecting agents often on frequently touched surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with others and their secretions. This means the usual handshakes, hugs and kisses, and sharing drinking glasses, food and utensils should be avoided.
