With the cheerful mood of a Christmas party, the December 1
Grand Opening of the Bloomington site of Bethel University was a huge success. Admissions advisors, program directors, and even faculty were
on hand to talk with potential learners and hand out literature.
"Overall, prospective learners consistently expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to meet faculty who lead the programs, and excitement about the opportunity to attend class in such a beautiful space in an accessible location," says Lori Jass, acting vice president and dean for the College of Adult & Professional Studies and Graduate School. "One learner said she had been nervous about going back to school, but that she could really see herself going to class in a place like that. Others asked if we would expand and offer the program in which they were most interested in that location."
President Jay Barnes and Provost David Clark, along with several members of the president's leadership team, came to meet prospective students and show their support for the adult programs at Bethel. Even students coming in for their weekly class got to meet some of the guests and offer their important perspective on the student experience at Bethel.
The festive atmosphere, enhanced by a flavorful fiesta from
Chevy's Fresh Mex, encouraged people to stay and chat. Hunched over cafe
tables, many prospective students talked to staff at length about their
educational experience and goals while enjoying fiery
chicken tacos and Mexican fixings served with margarita-flavored punch.
At the other end of the room, people huddled in groups of two or three to inquire about specific programs, or to seek help comparing their options. Among the programs, the MBA program garnered particular curiosity.
"Interest in the Bloomington MBA was brisk," said Greg Rance, admissions advisor. "At one point, I found myself speaking with four people at the same time. In a sense, I was hosting a mini information session right there on the spot."
"The goal is to bring transformational education to the southwest metropolitan area, but we needed to have a grand opening for the community to let them know Bethel is in the area," says Mike Price, admissions director. "This event created a lot of buzz and excitement that will lead to a larger awareness of Bethel University."
