The Department of Communication Studies at Bethel University offers two graduate programs. The M.A. in Communication teaches the "soft skills" of interpersonal and group communication within a framework of cross-cultural studies and a Christian worldview. Interested in teaching at the college level? The Postsecondary Teaching Certificate will prepare you for the expanding responsibilities of college educators in both traditional and adult settings.
M.A. in Communication program courses are offered one at a time, meeting one night a week. Program Director Leta Frazier says the program can be transformational because of the Christian perspective enveloped in each course, through the cross-cultural perspective of many courses, or learners' own research. She finds that "God
touches the students’ lives, and they find their voices.” The next cohort begins in fall 2010.
The Postsecondary Teaching Certificate is a 9-month program made up of accelerated course work. Learn best practices for the classroom, assessment and evaluative tools, knowledge and application of adult pedagogy, and proven strategies to create a learning community in the classroom. Take courses one at a time, meeting once per week on Saturday mornings. The next group will begin in February 2010.
“The Teaching Craft was the perfect first class,” said Loren Storkman, an engineer by trade who earned his certificate recently. “I never had the formal instruction into the ‘nuts and bolts’ of teaching. This class taught exactly that. I think that this certificate program will give me exactly what I need to break into the field part time.”
