CAPS/GS has added a new undergraduate degree to its offerings. Beginning fall 2009, the new Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership program will combine course work in organizational leadership with courses specifically designed for the healthcare worker.
Drawing from experience in the medical, public health, social services, and insurance industries, students will explore leadership specific to the healthcare industry, including teamwork, communications, and principles of accounting and budgeting.
Why the need for such a program? “People are often promoted in healthcare regardless of interest or knowledge of management or leadership,” explains Pete Erickson, lead instructor. “Maybe they are technicians, first responders, EMTs or nurses, but they have never been trained in leadership. We need to develop them so they have the tools and skills to succeed.”
“The Healthcare Leadership degree is the culmination of hard work, created by professionals in the field. The response and awareness to the program has been exciting,” Program Director Nikki Daniels said.
