New Sweden Baptist Church, New Sweden, ME
Historic Significance:
In 1870, the Governor of the State of Maine asked the Ambassador to Sweden,
W. W. Thomas, to offer a tract of land, and log cabin and free passage to American
to any families in Sweden willing to settle in Northern Maine. Thirteen families
responded. In 1871, the First Baptist Church of New Sweden, MAine was formed.
It later planted a daughter church in nearby Stockholm Maine.

New Sweden is north on Highway 1 in Maine to Caribou, ME. Then take route 161
north to New Sweden.
