Big Springs Baptist Church, Alcester, SD
Historic Significance:
The first Swedish immigrants came into this area in 1868. They built sod houses
to withstand the blizzards of the winter. P. A. Ring, an evangelist from Sweden
began preaching there in 1869 and in July the Big Springs Baptist Church was
formed in the Ring barn. Christopher Silene and Ragnar Arlander were among
the significant preachers in the early years of this ministry. Big Springs
is the oldest Baptist Church in South Dakota and continues a strong ministry
to this day.
