  • –Learn the daily operation of the news department
  • Develop and initiate search for stories on a daily basis

Fall Intern, Chicano Latino Affairs Council CLAC State of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN

Job Description:

  • The CLAC Community and Research Fellow Internship is designed to develop an understanding of state legislative functions, communication and research skills in collaboration with diverse Latino stakeholder organizations
  • These include non-profit, for-profit companies and local, state and federal government
  • The CLAC intern will learn to effectively network with community advocates and public policy-makers and understand the Minnesota legislative process
  • Interested candidates should have interest in public policy and the state's Latino community, and be able to work well with others
  • CLAC interns reports directly to the Executive Director. The fall intern collaborates closely with the Legislative Director and the Community Liaison
  • The Fall internship program begins on Sept. 22, 2008 and ends December 22, 2008; focus of the internship is Legislative Research
  • Legislative Engagement Duties 75%

    • Provide support, research and data input to draft policy recommendations
    • Provide logistical support in advocacy efforts to Minnesota Legislature
    • Support other activities for preparation of legislative session (10%)
    • Assist with bill tracking and monitoring
  • Community Engagement (25%)

    • Attend community meetings as required
    • Facilitate technical support to electronic databases
    • Assist with preparations for CLAC's 30th anniversary

Qualifications:

  • This internship opportunity is available to both upper level undergraduate and graduate students in any area
  • Applicants should be able to communicate effectively in written and oral English
  • Ability to speak and write Spanish is preferred
  • Other desirable factors include an academic background with strong interest in government and policy, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Applicants should possess excellent communication and collaboration skills and an ability to work on several project simultaneously

Salary/Benefits:

  • While this internship opportunity does not, of itself, carry academic credit, CLAC is willing to work with interested students in earning academic credit through their institution of higher learning
  • Additionally, a CLAC Community and Research Fellow Intern receives $12/hr and typically works 10 hours each week
