Dr. Gabriel earned his Doctor of Business Administration in
Accounting from Anderson University, Master of Science—Business Administration
in Accounting from Temple University, and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
from Grand Valley State University. He is a Certified Management Accountant and
member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Gabriel joined Bethel
University as a professor in the Business and Economics Department in 1991.
Previously, Gabriel served in various management, accounting, and information
technology positions for Cargill Inc., U.S. Bancorp, and Burroughs/Unisys
Corporation.
Gabriel’s research and professional interests are in tax policy, asset accumulation, and financial education for low and moderate-income families. Dissertation research examined savings by Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) recipients in Minnesota. Other research include studies of minority and women owned businesses, individual development accounts for low-income families, and homeownership programs for low and moderate-income families.
Gabriel has extensive experience with the Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance Program (VITA) sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. In
1999, Gabriel established a relationship between Bethel University and
AccountAbility MN, a nonprofit organization, to provide tax and financial services
for low-income families. Since then, Bethel University students have worked
with AccountAbility MN’s VITA program to prepare tax returns for families in
the Twin Cities of Minnesota
