Calls Bathed in Prayer

By Chad Boysen ’05, Manager of Development Phonathons

Student Phonathon workers pray about the
requests they gather during calls.

Prayer is a key component to Bethel phonathons. Each night before calling, the phonathon team takes time to share praises and prayer requests with one another. When contacting friends and alumni, each call ends with a simple question: “Is there anything that we can pray about for you?” Some student callers even follow up on prayer requests by mailing a personal, written note.

A Positive Connection

Comments that appear on mailed-in evaluations of the phonathon team members reflect appreciation for such prayers.

“‘Awesome’ was the word for the call, and Erin demonstrated that within her spirit. My wife was—and is—touched that she is included in the prayers of students. Thank you.”

Another wrote, “Lindsay was so friendly. I appreciated her loving concern when I shared with her a prayer request. God’s love shone through her.”

One alum declared, “Bethel is one of the rare institutions that we give to outside of our church, and that is solely attributable to the friendly, nonpressured phone calls from current students. Asking for any prayer requests I may have is especially significant to me because it shows me that Bethel has not forgotten what is truly important: our shared faith in Jesus Christ. It seems you are ‘majoring on the majors’ (pun fully intended), and so I don’t mind giving to my alma mater.”

What do the student callers have to say about their work?

“On every single call, we hear how people are doing and offer them prayer,” says Monique Champeau, a junior. “It’s amazing to hear their stories and learn how Bethel has influenced them.”

Sophomore Katie Backer observes, “I feel very blessed to be able to lift up the needs and praises of alumni and friends of Bethel who were once in my position [being a student]. There is so much power in prayer.”

The generosity of many like you helps to fund everyday needs on campus, but it is the grace of God that truly connects members with each other.
