Paul and Emily Lundberg: Retiring Wisely and Giving, TooPaul and Emily Lundberg consider themselves caretakers and are committed to seeking the best use of what already belongs to the Lord. Hard work (Paul in real estate and Emily in public health nursing), prudent financial moves, and God’s leading had proven profitable.
With the help of Dan Wiersum, Bethel’s associate vice president for planned giving, the Lundbergs transferred some property that had appreciated in value into a trust administered by the Bethel Foundation. The Foundation then sold the apartment buildings.
“I saw the quality and dedication of people we met there,” says Emily, who studied at Bethel, as did Paul.
The charitable trust avoids capital gains taxes, creates a substantial charitable tax deduction, and provides a lifetime income not only for the Lundbergs, but also for their children for several years. In time, the Lundberg’s gift will contribute $1 million to Bethel’s endowment.
“As I look toward retirement, I’ve begun to think more of eternal things and how God has blessed us,” says Paul. “We wanted to do something in return.”
