Give to Bethel University

Nearly 120 golfers, many Bethel alumni, battled the hot temps (but no rain!) to play in Bethel’s annual Golf Classic on June 23, this year held at StoneRidge Golf Club in Stillwater, Minn.
Golfers interacted with student volunteers stationed at various holes, participated in a putting contest, and tried for a hole-in-one on hole 9 to win a Toyota Venza. Unfortunately no one drove away in the new car. Following 18 holes of golf, attendees enjoyed a steak and walleye dinner in the clubhouse and heard from current Bethel senior Sarah Peterson about the new Brushaber Commons and President Jay Barnes on Bethel’s continuing mission to equip adventurous Christ-followers. Many golfers won various door prizes donated by more than 20 local businesses, restaurants, and organizations, together totaling over $5,600.
The winning foursome Dan Conrad ’90, Paul Schurbring ’92, Jeff Smith ’92, and Mark Perunovich ’90 came in 16 under par. Longtime Bethel friends and roommates, the four had not connected in more than 19 years—since college graduation.
“We had a great time at the tournament and took the time to catch up on each others lives. What a great way to reconnect,” says Conrad. “I think it’s likely that we’ll get together many times in the next 19 years. Maybe even next year’s tournament.”
With others, Conrad has played in past Bethel Golf Classics to support his alma mater. “With our good friend Jay Barnes as the new president, we are excited about Bethel’s present and future, but can’t help but fondly remember our past at Bethel,” he says.
Many others helped make the event possible. “A special thanks to all who participated, including the hole sponsors and those who donated special prizes to the tournament,” says Rick Berggren, a development officer who has helped lead the event for nearly 10 years. “Our desire is that everyone will have a quality experience which reflects on their bond with Bethel University. I encourage others to come out next year.”
Mark your calendars for next year’s Bethel Golf Classic! Tuesday, June 22, 2010.
