College of Adult & Professional Studies/Graduate School Faculty Information
Commencement is the capstone event in higher education, celebrating a great deal of academic effort and hard work by both graduates and faculty. Thank you for your investment in the lives of the CAPS/GS students who will be honored at this spring’s commencement ceremonies.
Saturday, December 21
1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Benson Great Hall
Faculty members are part of the processional and recessional. They sit on stage during the ceremony and wear full academic regalia. Under the direction of marshals, students will process into Benson Great Hall first, followed by faculty and then program personnel. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the recessional order is opposite the processional: program personnel recess out first, followed by faculty and then graduates.
Your affiliated degree program determines which ceremony you attend. Check the degree program assignment to confirm which ceremony is yours.
Full-time faculty whose primary school affiliation is CAPS/GS are required to attend the CAPS/GS ceremony designated for their degree program unless excused by the academic dean. They are strongly encouraged to attend both ceremonies. Full-time faculty who carry a split load and whose primary school affiliation is CAS are required to attend the CAS ceremony designated for their CAS department. They are also expected to attend the CAPS/GS ceremony designated for their CAPS/GS degree program.
Adjunct instructors are not required to attend a ceremony. However, they are encouraged to attend the ceremony designated for the degree program in which they teach, and they are welcome to attend both ceremonies.
A week or 2 before commencement, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your ceremony attendance. Your reply ensures your seat in Benson Great Hall with fellow faculty members.
There is no rehearsal. Instead, important ceremony instructions will be given at faculty lineup. You will also receive a copy of the commencement program at that time. Report to CC 311 for faculty lineup 30 minutes before the ceremony start time. Wear your full academic regalia.
If you are part of the program personnel, report instead to the President’s Office for lineup 20 minutes before the ceremony start time. Additional instructions will be sent to you about your role in the ceremony.
A reception for grads, guests, and faculty will take place in Brushaber Commons after the ceremony. Please go directly to the reception to meet graduates and their guests. Hallway hosts will direct everyone to the reception. Signs identifying degree programs will be posted throughout the reception area as gathering points for grads, guests, and faculty.
Some degree programs will gather in the Underground, and some will gather in Monson Dining Center. Light refreshments will be available.
All faculty must wear their full regalia at the ceremony, including cap, gown, and hood. If you do not own regalia, you may rent or purchase it for commencement through the Campus Store. Email the Campus Store for details. Orders must be placed by December 1 to ensure delivery.
If you have questions about your role in commencement, please contact commencement staff at email@example.com or 651.635.8049.
