Exhibition Description:

"Photographs" and Paintings explores abstraction through camera-less photographs and visually complex paintings rendered through simple materials. Van Dyke refers to his photographs as "mirror photos." They are made by sandwiching 4" x 5" sheet film between two mirrors and exposing the film to light using a photographic flash. These photographs, by nature of the way they're made, are attempts to make the most unmediated images possible. The paintings are made using an extensive layering and masking process that creates a visual and conceptual counter-balance to the pure abstraction of Van Dyke’s photographs.
