Drawing into Painting is a rare glimpse into the drawings and practice of celebrated painter Dale Johnson. This exhibition explores four reoccurring themes in Johnson's work: the figure, landscape, abstraction, and the ice shanty. Through trips abroad to the Dominican Republic and Italy, en plein air field trips to the Mississippi River, and tireless mentorship to Bethel students, Johnson has had a profound impact on the way his students think about color, beauty, and the world around us. In honor of Johnson's 40 years of exceptional teaching and to thank him for his service and influence, Drawing into Painting will close with a retirement celebration on May 11, 2012.
Dale Johnson completed his MFA in Painting studying with Angelo Ippolito at Michigan State University. He currently is Professor of Art, Bethel University, Saint Paul, Minnesota from 1970 through 2012. He has designed traveling Art Courses to Dominican Republic, where he used Altos de Chavon School of design as a travel base teaching the cultural history along with developing a series of paintings and drawings. In Italy, Professor Johnson bicycled in the countryside around Florence and Italian fishing villages staying in Catholic Convents while teaching painting. Mr. Johnson's paintings are represented in many museums, corporate and private collections. In addition to Bethel,he has taught Painting 18 years, during summers at Minnesota Institute For Talented Youth, Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minnesota.
