Choices for Page Layout in Dreamweaver

Page Layout
Templates

  • Drag the Layer icon from the Objects pallette to where you want the layer on the page OR
  • Click on the Layer Button and then draw your layer on your page.
  • Then format the layer using the Property Inspector when the layer is selected
  • Layers can be converted to Tables (and vice versa)
    • Modify > Layout Mode>Convert Tables to Layers
    • Modify > Layout Mode>Convert Layers to Tables
  • Use the Command (Control-PCs) key to nest or overlap layers

  • Plain simple pages using text, bulleted lists, numbered lists and such
    1. Use the list icons in the Inspector
    2. Use the List submenu in the Text menu
    3. Control click (Macs) or Right click (Windows)
    4. Pages load very fast, but layout is very limited
  • Use Tables
    1. Click on the Table button in the Objects Palette
    2. Drag the Table button from the Objects Palette
to where you want your table
    3. Select Table from the Insert menu
    4. Tables are useful for a more complex page layout structure
and yet still load relatively fast.

Use Layers --------------->>>>

Use Frames

Choose Modify > Frameset >
Split Frame OR use the Frames Palette in the Objects Window

To delete a frame, just drag the
border all of the way off the page

Frames consist of individual frames
and Framesets which must be
also saved
File > Save Frameset

Frames also do not work in all browsers and can be problematic if you are forced to open up frames within frames - See how Blackboard opens up Windows within its frames. Note that a lot of information is lost about the "authorship" of the implanted web page in the frame.

Layers are can be used as layout tools and then converted to tables, but by themselves do not identically place layers in different browsers, or in Dreamweaver 4 you can use layout Tables
