Adding Video Clips to Blackboard 7

Short video clips can be added directly to your Blackboard course via the following instructions:

Note: Current Bethel Policy (as determined by copyright law) ONLY allows us to stream full length video from files on our streaming server.  Currently we stream two formats quicktime and realplayer. For more details either contact Bob Kistler, Faculty Consultant or Bob Suderman, Copyright Compliance Officer. Streaming is required as files must not be "downloadable" by the user. For the IC/Library to create a streaming version of a video for your classroom use in Blackboard, the following criteria must be met:

  1. The library must own the video (although the video may be assigned to a dept or college).
  2. Currently we only stream either quicktime or real player.  We do not have a windows media server.
  3. You will be provided ONLY with a link or a reference movie that links to the media for your use as you see fit. (i.e. to upload into Blackboard via the instructions below).
  4. Support must be handled through the normal help desk process 6500 or provided within your own program.

Step 1:  Go to one of the Content areas in Blackboard like Course Documents either via the Edit View or the Control Panel. Click on the Add Item button.

Step 2:

Part 1 Content Information: Fill in the Name blank.  In the Text box place the Reference Information about the video and if it is copyrighted make mention of that as well.

Part 2 Content:  Select the Choose File button in the Attach local file section. Then select Display media file within the page . This is essential because otherwise your video will be downloadable and may violate copyright.

Part 4 Submit: Click the submit button.

Step 3: Wait until your video uploads into Blackboard and the Content Actions page loads.

You don't need to modify anything on this page unless you wish.

Note 1: The "Set Height" parameter includes the height for the Controls and so  setting the height to 300 will allow for the controls and your video. Enlarging these parameters unless your video is larger makes your video larger, but lowers the quality of the images.

Note 2: Large videos may not be viewable by those with slower speed connections. If user connection speed is a concern, you should use video streamed from our streaming servers as multiple versions can be auto-selected depending on the users connection speed.

Click the Submit button to complete the upload and configuration of your video clip.

Step 4. Test your video.

Testing your video from multiple computers both on and off campus is a good idea to make certain that all works as you would like.
