I have heard that if you take a long time on an exam you can lose your entire exam.

  • The issue here is that all Internet Service Providers and Blackboard have security systems that log users off automatically after a period of inactivtiy. If you take a long time on an assessment (exam or survey) you may be automatically "disconnected". When you don't move from web page to web page the system considers you inactive, even though you are actively taking an exam. You must then re-check your connection and re-connect prior to submitting your exam.
  • Students can prevent from being timed out by Bethel, Blackboard or by their ISP by following the following instructions.

    1. Check the connection to your ISP. Open up a new page in your browser by going to the File menu and selecting New Window. Then browse to a page that you are certain that you have never accessed recently. Alternatively if you have a "connection monitor", you can check the status of your connection in that way.
    2. Check your connection to Bethel's Blackboard System. Again go to the File menu and select New Window (Never try to browse to a new page, or go Back or Forward in the window in which you are taking your exam as you will lose all of your exam.). In that new window go to your My Blackboard and enter the course in which you are taking your exam. Click on a button that will take you to an area that you have not recently visited. If you can access new pages in blackboard then you should be able to successfully submit your exam in the window in which your exam resides. If in the new window, you must re-authenticate, then log in again and then make sure you can access blackboard pages successfully and then go back to your exam window and submit the exam. If you have other exam related problems, please contact your instructor or the help desk (651-638-6500).
