How Do I Turn off the Drawing Canvas from Word 2002?

One of the features new to Word 2002 from Word 97 is the drawing canvas. When you start a drawing or text box in Word 2002, the default setting is to create a blank 'canvas' like figure 1 below upon which to draw or create a text box. The canvas makes layout cumbersome as it does not float over text and masks actual placement. Fortunately, you can turn off the drawing canvas using the directions below.

To turn off the drawing canvas:

1. Select Tools from the main menu in Word, then Options from the drop down menu.
2. Click on the General tab.
3. Uncheck the box entitled Automatically create a drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes. It is located near the bottom.
4. Click OK.
