BSP-NAS Replaces Servers Usonia2 and Samuel

"What is BSP-NAS?" That's a question heard frequently at the help desk as faculty and staff first experience the server BSP-NAS. Mumbo jumbo? Well, not quite. As Bethel grows, so does its IT needs. With over 40 servers to be managed a naming scheme was devised to help put a structure to them.

BSP stands for Bethel St. Paul. Although seemingly appropriate, NAS does not stand for Needed Another Server, but for Network Attached Storage. This upgrade in server class represents a significant improvement in speed, storage capacity, and reliability over the former two servers. It also represents another division being removed that resulted from having two separate IT departments. In 2001 the former academic and administrative IT departments integrated to better serve Bethel community. The integration of the academic server Usonia2 and the administrative server Samuel follows this same endeavor.

In order to integrate the two servers together, a revised general drive mapping was created for Windows users.

  • O drive: Academic department or administrative office drive (The Dept subfolder of the corresponding folder on the Q: drive)
  • Q drive: Centralized location of academic and administrative folders. Each folder has three subfolders: Dept, Public, and Share.  For more information, read Centralizing Departmental Folders.
  • U drive: User drive/home folder
  • The P: and S: drives are transitional drives that will be dispersed into other folders.
