Network Configuration

Bethel University uses the 802.1x security protocol to provide secure internet connection and authentication on our wired/wireless networks. Because of this each student living in residential housing (ResNet) or using the wireless in the Academic buildings will need to set up their computers for 802.1x authentication.

Routers

The ITS Help Desk does not support wireless/wired routers on ResNet due to the complexities of the 802.1x authentication system. Please do not bring these to campus or request help setting them up.

Gaming Consoles and DVRs

Using devices such as gaming consoles and DVRs on Bethel's Residential Network require connection the device to be 802.1x compatible or requires a 802.1x compatible machine to share its network with the system via Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Currently it is possible to share a connection with computers using Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 but not Macintosh OS X. Although Apple's OS can be configured for connection sharing, a bug in the OS prevents it from working on an 802.1x network. When Apple resolves this issue, connection sharing will be possible.
