On Wednesday, February 29, a contingent of 16 Bethel students, along with President Jay Barnes and Vice President for Constituent Relations Ralph Gustafson, participated in Day at the Capitol, visiting legislators at the State Capitol in St. Paul to advocate for the Minnesota State Grant Program. The grant program is a source of funding for more than one of four Minnesota college students, including 1,014 recipients at Bethel—that’s 29% of all Bethel students. In total, more than $3.2 million in state grant awards are being made to students at Bethel. The group met with legislators from their home districts, thanked them for their work, and described their Bethel experiences with the hope of eliciting continued legislative support for state grant funding.

Day at the Capitol also included opportunities for students to connect with the many Bethel alumni working in state government. An alumni breakfast featured legislators, lobbyists, and legislative aides who shared their experiences and their vision for serving others. Dale Witherington ’76, SEM ’80, who ministers to Minnesota legislators, highlighted their work. “There are some significantly committed men and women in the legislature who want to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ,” he said.
