For more than a decade, Bethel biology professor Bryan
Anderson C ‘91, his wife Laura Anderson C ’91, and their three children, Steve,
Jeni, and Becky, traveled as often as they could to a remote area in western
Kansas to visit relatives and look for fossils. Eight years ago, those long
trips were rewarded when Laura discovered the vertebrae of a fossil sticking
out of an eroded hill.

<rss:description> In Jan Markell’s weekly email update, “Understanding the Times,” she criticized
a November 3 Interreligious Symposium at Bethel titled, “Meditation: Buddhist
and Christian ‘Is There Common Ground?’” The Interreligious Symposia have been
a part of Bethel’s religious studies program for five years. The goal of these symposia
has been to help Bethel students become aware of significant world religious
traditions, and so participants have included Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists. It
is part of Bethel’s “world-changers” value to help students think deeply and
care genuinely for people whom Christ loves—even though those people have
opinions or beliefs that are contrary to Scripture. Combined with the many ways
students are taught, mentored, and encouraged in their Christian faith, these
symposia help students who choose to participate become storm-hardy Christians,
able to maintain their commitment to faith in the face of opposition.

 Bethel
senior Kendra Rimmereid won Abroad View
magazine’s 2009 Meta Photo Contest for her photo entitled “Colors of India.” She
studied abroad in India
during fall 2008. Rimmereid, who is a social studies education major, said her
experience abroad will help her professionally. “Abroad I gained a lot of
self-confidence and a broader worldview…It also made me more comfortable
working with kids from very different backgrounds than me, which is important
nowadays,” she explained.

Edgren Scholars Part 1 of 4

How do we go back and fill in the blanks of an incomplete
memory? This is one of the questions that Professor of Psychology Adam Johnson
and senior computer science major Zach Varberg sought to answer in their
research as summer Edgren scholars.
