Types of Accommodations

Notetaking

Note takers supply a copy of their notes to a student(s) with disabilities during their class.
Students who cannot process information while transcribing their notes use note takers who provide them equal access to lectures. This accommodation is set up using a three step process.

  1. Email request for the need for volunteer note takers (with student privacy in mind).
  2. Collaborate with DRS to recruit and monitor the performance of note takers.
  3. Monitor attendance and notify DRS of excessive absences of student with this accommodation.

Faculty Responsibilities

  1. 1. IF you receive an accommodation letter from the Director of Disability Resources and Services (DRS) that includes a request for a notetaker please email the template below to all of the students on your roster.

    Please be sure not to disclose the name of the student receiving accommodations when making this request.  Also include how you wish for students to inform you of their willingness to volunteer.

    Notetaker request statement – PLEASE EMAIL TO THE CLASS

    Bethel University’s Disability Resources and Services (DRS) is requesting a volunteer notetaker for a student with a disability in this class. A notetaker is requested for qualified students who need this type of support (i.e. students with hearing loss, vision loss, learning disabilities, attention disorders, physical limitations, etc.) The notetaking support is extremely important to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access and are not at an academic disadvantage.

    Serving as a notetaker can be a great opportunity for you to gain volunteer experience for an academic program or major and to add to your resume. Once you have completed your responsibilities as a notetaker, you may choose to receive a letter of Recognition for Volunteer Service, a gift certificate from the Bethel Campus Store, or both.

    Additional information about the letter of recommendation and the gift certificate will be available at Disability Resources & Services.
  2. If you receive one or more positive responses from students in your class, please forward the names of these volunteers to our Accommodations Coordinator, Elisabeth Von Scmidt Pauli at elisabeth-von-schmidt-pauli@bethel.edu. Ideally, two notetakers should be identified in the event that one is absent from class.
  3. The student volunteer will be asked to stop into the DRS office to receive copy card so that they can make copies for the student.
  4. The student volunteer will make copy of his/her notes to be brought to the DRS office weekly.
  5. DRS will be responsible for getting the notes to the student who needs them.
  6. If a notetaker is not found within the first week of the class, please contact our office.

*Notetakers are only to provide note if the student is present in class, unless otherwise determined by Disability Resources & Services.

Flexible Attendance

Flexible attendance is considered an appropriate accommodation for students with functional limitations impacting their ability to attend class. Some of these can include chronic conditions, with random or cyclical acute episodes, a recent diagnosis, onset, or change in a condition or unexpected illness or injury that causes significant limitations that prevent the student from attending class.

This accommodation does not allow a student to capriciously skip class; instead, it is designed to be a process that is designed to meet the disability needs of the individual.

Generally, when flexible attendance is assigned as an accommodation, we are asking professors to flex the attendance policy to allow absences over the allowed absences stated in the attendance policy.

This accommodation needs to be established in advance.

Faculty Responsibility

  1. Collaborate with DRS and the student about attendance expectations and submitting past due assignments or making up exams.
  2. Communicate with DRS about any concerns with this accommodation or if the number of absences become excessive.

Flexible Due Dates

Due to disability or medical issues, due dates or exams may need to be rescheduled in consultation with a faculty member with proper medical documentation submitted to the DRS.

Being flexible with the student about assignment due dates and exam times helps to reduce their anxiety, or allow them select times when they are the most alert, not undergoing treatment or getting needed writing support.

This accommodation is an alteration to existing due date policies.

Faculty Responsibility

Collaborate with DRS and the student establish appropriate due date guidelines for the student when an extension is requested.

Testing

Disability Resources and Services Office can provide a testing rooms for students who have challenges testing in the typical classroom environment.

These include:

  • Extended time (50% more), 75% more or double time.
  • Reduced Distraction room (1-10 students)
  • Separate room (one student)
  • Reader (someone who reads the exam questions to the student)
  • Scribe (someone who writes what the student says during a test)
  • Electronic Responses (the student is allowed to use a computer to type responses)
  • Music (student is allowed to listen to music while testing)
  • Memory Aids (scratch paper, notecards, calculator, notes)

Faculty Responsibility

  1. Complete the online test request form at least 3 days prior to the exam date. (Note: student should be allowed to schedule exam/test at any time during the testing center hours the day the exam is scheduled).
  2. Deliver exams/quizzes to DRS at least 24 hours prior to student’s arrival to take the test.
  3. Collaborate with DRS staff to resolve problems or questions regarding exam/quizzes as they arise.

Auxiliary Aids (Assistive Technology)

Auxiliary aids" is defined as services or devices that enable persons with impaired sensory, manual, or speaking skills to have an equal opportunity to participate in, and enjoy the benefits of, programs or activities.

Some examples include, readers, Brailled or enlarged print materials, audio recordings (digital recorders, live scribe pen), and other similar services and devices. Telephone handset amplifiers, telephones compatible with hearing aids, telecommunication devices for deaf persons (TDD's), interpreters, CART, C Print, note takers, written or electronic materials, and other similar services and devices.

Faculty Responsibility

Collaborate with DRS and the student to troubleshoot any access issues In a timely manner.
