Jeannine Brown, instructor of New Testament (St. Paul), successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Disciples in Narrative Perspective: The Portrayal and Function of the Matthean Disciples” on October 23. She is receiving her Ph.D. from Luther Seminary in St. Paul.

John Cionca, professor of ministry leadership (St. Paul); Denise Muir Kjesbo, director and lead faculty of children’s and family ministries (St. Paul); Don Verseput, professor of New Testament (St. Paul); Brian Labosier, professor of biblical studies (Seminary of the East); Leland Eliason, executive vice president and provost; and George Brushaber, president, attended the Lexington Seminar, Bar Harbor, Maine, June 7-12.

Carla Dahl, professor of marriage and family studies and director of the marriage and family therapy program (St. Paul), attended a “Formation Principles and Practices” retreat and workshop sponsored by Parker Palmer’s Center for Teacher Formation; published an article on family abuse and forgiveness in the July issue of The Clergy Journal; co-authored an article with Steve Sandage, assistant professor of marriage and family therapy (St. Paul), and M.F.T. graduate Tina Wiens on the spirituality and psychology of Simone Weil for the Journal of Psychology and Christianity; conducted a workshop on family spirituality for the Family Life Conference at Woodbury Church of Christ, Woodbury, Minn.; and conducted a workshop on self-differentiation for alumni pastors’ wives as part of the Lilly III Leadership Enrichment Initiative.

Kent Eaton, director of supervised ministry and placement (San Diego), presented a four-night lecture series on “Building Bridges and Crossing Borders—The Emergence of the Multicultural Church” at Torrey Pines Christian Church, La Jolla, Calif.

Leland Eliason, executive vice president and provost, preached at churches in California, Minnesota, Michigan, and New Jersey; attended commencement exercises at all three seminary locations; and attended the Baptist General Conference annual meeting in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Paul Ferris, professor of Old Testament (St. Paul), preached at Knox Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, each week in June and July.

Nils Friberg, professor of pastoral care (St. Paul), wrote a chapter entitled “The Role of the Chaplain in Spiritual Care” for a new book, Aging and Spirituality: Spiritual Dimensions of Aging Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy, edited by David O. Moberg (Haworth Pastoral Press, 2001). He alsoattended the North Central Region Annual Training Seminar of the International Conference of Police Chaplains in Rochester, Minn., October 29-30. During the fall semester he taught an at-distance course, “Pastoral Leadership and Boundaries,” for St. John’s University School of Theology. David Howard, professor of Old Testament (St. Paul), returned from a fall trip to Emmanuel University of Oradea, in Oradea, Romania, where he taught for one week. He makes this teaching pilgrimage twice a year.

Denise Muir Kjesbo, director and lead faculty of children’s and family ministries (St. Paul), participated in a high school youth adventure/discipleship trip to Colorado, June 16-28, serving as a staff member and cook; served as a senior high camp staff member at Camp Judson in the Black Hills, July 21-28; and attended the Professor’s Summit for Group Publishing, Aug. 1-3.

Mark McCloskey, dean of the Center for Transformational Leadership (St. Paul), spoke on the topic “Leadership in Crisis” as part of a panel discussion dealing with the events of September 11.

Robert Rakestraw, professor of theology (St. Paul), preached on “The Man Who Walked to Heaven (Enoch)” at Bethany Baptist Church, Roseville, Minn., and attended board meetings for Restoring the Heart Ministries (sexual abuse and post-abortion concerns) and Sucrado (famine relief, theological training, and church planting in Sudan).

Glen Scorgie, professor of theology (San Diego), published the following articles: “Hermeneutics and the Meditative Use of Scripture: The Case for a Baptized Imagination,” Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society; and “Are We on the Same Page? An Evangelical Response to Germaine Greer’s ‘The Whole Woman,’” Priscilla Papers of the Christians for Biblical Equality. He also made the following presentations: a response to a lecture by Dr. Ronald Cole-Turner entitled “Religious Perspectives on Embryonic Stem Cell Policy”; “The Cross and the Crescent: Islam Through Christian Eyes”; “The French Canadian Missionary Society and Roman Catholicism in Quebec”; “Christ and the Powers of Evil: A Christian Perspective on the Occult”; and “Spiritual Resilience,” co-presented with Kathryn Scorgie. He also served as a member of the Los Angeles Ordination Guidance Committee and preached at several California churches.
