All Bethel students are required to have some form of extended, cross-cultural experience. About 45 percent acquire it by studying abroad, ranking Bethel 19th among master’s-level universities for the vitality of its off-campus programs.*

Studying cross-culturally is fundamental to becoming confident disciples of Christ and agents of peace,” says Vincent Peters, dean of off-campus programs/international studies. Led by Peters, Bethel offers more than 30 study options off campus. He says the most convenient time to schedule study- abroad is usually a sophomore’s spring semester, or either semester of a student’s junior year—to work in best with the demands and progression of most majors.

“We encourage students to explore various study abroad opportunities when they begin their freshman year at Bethel,” says Peters. “Some programs require applications a year in advance, or in some cases, early applicants are eligible for discounts or scholarships. “Also,” adds Peters, “planning early is crucial for students who have majors with practicums or internships that will keep them on campus their last one or two years.”

Can students afford to study abroad? “Most programs are within the cost range of Bethel tuition, room, and board, and some programs include international airfare,” says Peters. “Our office also has a list of several scholarship resources available to supplement the cost.”

Registration is in October to study abroad next spring. For destinations, visit the International Studies website.
