This site was designed, maintained, and, unless otherwise stated, written by Dr Neil Lettinga. I earned my PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in 1987. I am currently Professor of History and the History Department Chair at Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota, where I teach African History and African Religions, in addition to courses in European history. I have been honored to have been a visiting Professor at Daystar University, Niarobi, Kenya, and on several occasions at the Meserete Kristos College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. My research interests center on the history of Christianity in Africa, in particular the interaction between the culture of the Roman Empire in the first century, western European and American Culture and African Cultures as mediated by the message of the Christian gospel. I am currently at work on the experience of the Ethiopian Protestant (Pente) churches during the decade of repression under the Marxist regime of General Mengistu Haile Mariam.
