Clement Mok has been a big player in the design world for the past 2 decades. He is a designer, software publisher/developer, author, and design patent holder. Mok has started multiple design related business. These include Studio Archetype (acquired by Sapient), CMCD, and NetObjects. In 1996, Mok authored a book Designing Business: Multiple Media, Multiple Disciplines in which he puts emphasis on how design is being redefined due to the new technological advancements; Mok believes the role of the designer is to design ‘understanding.’ He has since published a second edition, Designing Business 2.0 (2000), where he continues to set out his design philosophy. Mok has used all of these veins to advance the field of design, always pushing its limits.
Studio Archetype—a company where Mok is the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director—is one of the modes through which Mok is creating influence. The client list that his firm has attracted over the years has many “big names” on it such as IBM, 3COM, MSN, Motorola, Wells Fargo, NBC, and many more influential companies. The clientele that Mok services to is not just a sign of his quality of work but also of his integrity. Mok is interesting in working with these companies because of the positive influence he can have on people in general. Mok explains “Business and institutions with great reach are often clients I am attracted to...I see it as an opportunity to redefine the standard and raise the benchmark. Elevating the mundane and using design to improve the quality of living is an aspiration I try to live day-in and day-out.” After the merge with Sapient Corporation, the firm is still pursuing to make technology usable, intuitive, and fun.
The influence Mok has made on the world of design does not stop with Studio Archetype. CMCD was the first CD-ROM to offer royalty-free images for digital use. This company is now on the web as a subscription-based royalty-free stock image database—www.visualsymbols.com. Then Mok went on to found the software company NetObjects. This company is responsible for the creation of the highly praised Web design tool NetObjects Fusion.
Design Consultant is also one of the jobs on Mok’s list of professions. Over the past twenty years he has consulted for clients like Adobe, American Express, Apple, Hallmark, IBM, Mayo Clinic, Microsoft, Nagano Winter Olympic Committee, Nintendo, QVC, Sony, United Airlines, UPS and Wells Fargo Bank.
Mok has also been involved in the launch of several Silicon Valley’s finest technologies and companies. These include Apple’s Macintosh, Herman Miller’s Aeron chair, the Microsoft Network, interactive television, broadband applications, web cast events, expert publishing systems and major identity programs.
An advocate on design and technology practices, he’s been recognized by IDSA, NYArt Directors Club, AIGA, Broadcast Designers Association, American Center for Design, Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, ID, Graphis, Fast Company, Fortune, Business Week, and CEO magazine with major awards and citations. With a rap sheet like this it is no surprise that his designs have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe and Asia.
Also to his credit, he serves on the advisory boards of numerous technology companies, colleges and non-profit organizations. Recently, Mok was the president of AIGA, the country’s largest communication design professional organization.
