Academic Success

What increases the likelihood of academic success?

  • Initiate and access services and accommodations at the beginning of the school year
  • Attend regular meetings with a Disability Specialist
  • Maintain regular contact with an academic advisor other campus resources
  • Visit professors during their office hours for questions, clarification, feedback, etc.
  • Have an understanding of the impact of the disability and compensatory strategies that work
  • Attend supplemental instruction sessions
  • Routinely use a planner and/or other organizational and time management tools
  • Use technology
  • Seek out the library reference staff
  • Be open to utilizing the counseling center and tutoring as needed
  • Bring outlines and papers to the writing lab

What students should have

  • A planner: paper or electronic version, that breaks the day down into 15 minute intervals, and has a week at a glance
  • Post-it notes: a variety of sizes and colors
  • Highlighters: The more colors the better (Zazzle packs of 12 colors)
  • Notecards: 3×5 loose or those on a spiral binding
  • 3 ring binders
  • Tab sheets with folders
  • Loose-leafed paper
  • Clear sheet protector
