This workshop is for CAPS and GS Faculty to further grow in their teaching and leadership skills with an emphasis on diversity. Faculty may choose between the following 2 options for the faculty development day. All events will be held at the Anderson Center in the 2 West Suite. More detailed room assignments will be available upon arrival. Details about the sessions can be found below the option agendas.

Plenary Session

Difficult Conversations | Leah Fulton, Associate Dean for Inter-Cultural Student Programs & Services, and Dr. Amy Poppinga, Instructor of History

Hard conversations surface in many places at Bethel including the classroom, hallways, and offices. Do you ever feel unprepared or ill-equipped to address difficult conversations? Someone said, “When we avoid difficult conversations we trade short-term comfort for long-term dysfunction.” This workshop addresses difficult conversations and the dynamics that accompany them. After presenting a case study, we will have faculty work in small groups and practice using an established model for engaging in challenging dialogue (i.e. courageous conversations) in a way that encourages transformation.

  • Setting the stage for success: Helping students write and support a thesis/focus Dr. Judi Landrum, Divisional Dean of Education and Christian Ministries & Director of Writing

    All written texts do not have a formally written thesis, but all written texts do make a specific point.  As our students develop their thoughts in a written text, their thesis or focus may become lost or may become unclear. This workshop focuses on some pre-drafting and feedback strategies that help students support their thesis or key point(s) in a given text.
  • Difficult conversations: A guided discussion | Dr. Peg McCormick, Associate Professor of Special Education and CAPS & GS University Diversity Rep.and Dr. Jay Rasmussen, Professor of Education and CAS Faculty Development Coordinator

    As a follow up from today’s plenary sessions with Amy Poppinga and Leah Fulton, this guided discussion explores central topics presented in the book Difficult Conversations: How to discuss what matters most (Stone, Patton, & Heen, 2010). We will engage in guided dialogue and work in teams to refine these ideas into practical strategies.

Shalom Training Dr. Ruben Rivera, Chief Diversity Officer for Bethel University

Shalom refers to the mutual wellness of all people and things under God’s loving rule, encompassing peace, justice and harmony of all relationships in community. Reconciliation is an often long and always holistic process for the creation or restoration shalom between persons and communities. In the Bible, reconciliation-Shalom is at the heart of God’s redemptive work in history and central to the faith and work of God’s people. Yet clearly the world is a place that seems to experience so little sustained shalom, even among various groups who claim the name Christian. The Shalom seminar will look at some basic understanding of biblical reconciliation-shalom. It will then explore key factors that hinder it (some of these factors are not obvious or are rarely discussed). Finally, suggestions will be made for developing capacities for communities characterized by shalom. A few short readings will be emailed to participants, which need to read these before the seminar.
