Event Description

Legacy Keepers Harlem Renaissance Literature & Arts Camp is a summer enrichment program for high school students. The camp is designed for young people to have exposure to the great achievement legacies of African Americans. Dr. Harold Carter, a one-time assistant pastor to Martin Luther King Jr., once said, “You’ve got to embrace your past in order to have a foundation for the future.” It is through an appreciation and knowledge of past challenges, triumphs, and victories that the participants of this camp come to realize that all things are truly possible. They will also be exposed to college campus life and current college student mentors to help them map their plan to prepare for an amazing future.

Participants in this camp will explore the works of great writers of the Harlem Renaissance like Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Jessie Fauset, and more. They will be exposed to the music, art, dance, and ideals that shaped the Harlem Renaissance into an era that raised the American consciousness and inspired people globally toward new achievements and appreciation for advancement. Participants will also have an opportunity to create and learn how to use their gifts and talents to uplift their community.

Please complete the online registration by May 10. Space is lilmited; an intake committee will review applications, including the required short essay, on a first-come basis. The $275 cost per participant includes campus housing, all meals, and all camp activities. A deposit of $75 must be paid at registration. You may choose to pay the full cost ($275) or only the deposit ($75) at registration; if you choose the latter option, you must pay the remaining $200 by June 15.
