Artist Talk and Opening Reception: Deborah Aschheim

Join the Bethel Department of Art and Design and nationally-renowed artist, Deborah Aschheim, for Ascheim's exhibition, Landmark. The artist will give a talk followed by a reception on Wednesday, October 9 and 6:00pm in the Eastlund Room at the Bethel University campus. Landmark is a meditation on the shifting spaces of memory and urban landscape, a collision of public space of cities with a more idiosyncratic personal geography of memory. For Landmark, Aschheim has created new sculptures that expand her installation "Camelot," originally a mash up of familiar and imagined buildings installed at Los Angeles International Airport (2015-16) a ghost city that welcomed disoriented travelers into a shared dream. The drawings and sculptures in Landmark explore the fragmentation and layering of geography and experience, and the process of making meaning, monument and myth out of our lives in cities.

About the Artist:
Deborah Aschheim makes installations, sculptures and drawings about memory and place.  Her solo exhibitions include OPC in Puerto Vallarta; Barrick Museum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, CA; Suyama Space in Seattle, San Diego State University Art Gallery, the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach.  She has created permanent public artworks across California and for Amazon.com in Seattle. Aschheim has has been artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH; Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA; McColl Center for Art and Innovation in Charlotte, NC; Bemis Center in Omaha, NE and the Roswell, NM, AIR program. She was the inaugural Hellman Visiting Artist at the Memory and Aging Center in the Neurology Department at the University of California, San Francisco from 2009-2011. Aschheim has received grants from California Humanities, the Center for Cultural Innovation, the California Community Foundation and the City of Los Angeles.
