Here are some expectations we have of our nurse-midwifery students and for our clinical partners in Bethel's M.S. in Nurse-Midwifery program. Please know that your student will be expected to connect with you early in the semester to set up a schedule for clinical hours. We expect 50 clinical hours to equal 1 credit. We encourage our students to work more hours if needed to meet the course objectives and to enrich the learning experience.

Student Expectations

  • Wear professional clothing, including a lab coat, with their Bethel ID, and your site ID if required
  • Bring their own stethoscopes
  • Bring their own resources or reference materials, either handheld or paper (please discuss your preferences with the student during orientation)
  • Prompt notification of absence in case of emergency or illness. They need to also notify the clinical coordinator and make arrangements for to make-up the absence as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for their own learning by knowing their learning needs, developing a goal for the shift/day, and communicating that to the preceptor
  • Demonstrate professional behavior including compassion, respect, sensitivity, and courtesy to colleagues and patients
  • Maintain and update their Typhon database for skills checklists, encounter logs, etc.
  • Receive feedback without defensiveness, communicate with respect, and honor differences between individuals without judgment or negativity

Bethel Faculty and Staff Expectations

The Clinical Director, Coordinator, and Clinical Faculty supports both students and preceptors. It is our goal to create a positive experience for both our nurse-midwifery students and preceptors. For immediate assistance please contact the faculty member. If the faculty member is unavailable, please reach out to the Clinical Coordinator and/or Director. For additional needs related to the program or clinical please contact Katrina Wu, Program Director, at katrina-wu@bethel.edu

The faculty member will contact preceptors in the beginning, mid-semester, and at the end of the semester by phone or email to discuss your student’s needs and progress in clinical learning. Students should prompt all scheduled evaluations by completing a self-evaluation of their progress.  They should then share this evaluation with their preceptor to allow the preceptor to evaluate the student’s learning and progress. Preceptors should discuss their evaluations of the student with the student and faculty. Evaluations and final grades of the student’s learning is determined by the preceptor and the faculty. If preceptors have concerns about the student’s progress they are encouraged to reach out to the faculty immediately. We are committed to working with you to develop a plan to support positive outcomes for you and the student.

Orientation

Please orient your student to your facility on a non-clinical or the first clinical day. It’s helpful for the student to have a basic understanding of your facility, how it’s organized,  and your expectations for their time with you.

Our clinical coordinator will ensure that the student has completed any EHR or other training required by your facility prior to this first day.

Clinical Assignments

Bethel University uses Typhon for student evaluation, skill logs, and tracking. Students are responsible to keep their Typhon tracking current. Students Typhon record is reviewed frequently by faculty and preceptors throughout the semester to ensure the learning objectives for the semester are met.  Preceptors are not asked to be responsible for this entering the tracking of student experiences.

Evaluations

Student evaluations can be completed either on paper or online through a Word document shared between you, your student, and the faculty member assigned to your student. Evaluations can become an educational time for your student if you fill it out together so they understand the rationale behind your comments. Please email your evaluations to the clinical faculty. Here's a sample evaluation (pdf) for you to view. Each clinical course has its own unique evaluation form.
