Teaching Strategies for Preceptors

These resources are available to help preceptors brush up on their teaching skills and develop new ones.

ACNM Preceptor Articles

In 2017, the Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health published a Preceptor special edition. These articles are a collection of resources from that edition for preceptors and students as they journey together in growing future midwives:

The One-Minute Preceptor

The One-Minute Preceptor is a clinical teaching tool that has been validated in numerous studies. It's easy to learn and implement. The 5 skills provide a framework for approaching the needs of your student and help teach them while staying efficient and on-time in a busy clinic or intrapartum day. These skills are:

  • Student presents the case and commits to the diagnosis
  • Preceptor probes for supporting evidence—the student’s rationale for the diagnosis
  • Preceptor teaches on a single point and/or reinforces a general rule
  • Tell them what they did right
  • Correct any mistakes

ACNM Resources

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) provides multiple resources for preceptors of nurse-midwifery students and can be accessed even if you are not a member. Learn about teaching strategies, how to work with students with different skill levels, and how to lovingly confront a student, among other helpful resources. You can also view an introduction to precepting video provided by the University of Utah.
