At Bethel, we partner with Sodexo for all of our food service on campus. In all that they do, Sodexo is committed to being a good steward of the environment and raising awareness about making our food habits more sustainable.

Here are just a few of the ways we’re making an effort to be green:

Organic Waste Separation. The appropriate materials to place in the organic containers include any food waste and paper products like napkins, paper towels, and tissue like Kleenex or Puffs. Cream colored cutlery being used at Bethel, as well as sandwich boxes from Royal Grounds and the bottom section of 3900 containers are also compostable. Paper receipts from the sandwich boxes should be removed and put in recycling, not organic waste. Wax coated paper and any plastic parts related to the sandwich/food containers should not be placed in the organics containers.

Food recycling. Sending food waste to a local hog farm instead of the landfill.

Reusable to-go containers. Giving students the option to grab food and beverages in reusable containers and encouraging the use of reusable mugs for coffee and other warm drinks.

Phosphorus-free chemicals. Keeping phosphorus out of local lakes and ponds.

Local foods. Supporting the local economy and reducing the distance our food has to travel.

Recycling campaign. Recycling cans, plastic bottles, and paper—and always looking for innovative ways to do more.

Royal gardens. Growing some of our own vegetables and herbs right here on campus.
